EarthSoft CEO Mitch Beard is headed to China this weekend as part of the ESRI contingent presenting the Eighth ESRI User Conference in Beijing and Shanghai over the next week.

Beard, CEO of EarthSoft for 15 years, will present “EQuIS interfaces with ArcMap, ArcGIS, Spatial Analyst, and 3D Analyst” during the conference, beginning Oct. 20. Members of the Chong Qing Environmental Protection Bureau and the Shanghai Bureau of Environmental Protection Bureau are expected to be in attendance.

Beard and the ESRI contingent will present other topics including ESRI’s future technology plans, the GIS application, and environmental protection case studies including an aquatic environment water-quality model, prediction of early-warning models and atmospheric models, as well as integrating ArcGIS with the Chong Qing Environmental Protection Bureau IT (data center construction, process management, information system construction, and more.)

In addition, they’ll discuss the application of new GIS technology in environmental protection and public safety, cloud computing, GIS in telecommunication, and ArcGIS 3D.

The conference Web site is www.esrichina-bj.cn.

EQuIS is a GIS-driven decision support system including a relational database schema in SQL Server or Oracle for all manner of water, air, geotechnical, and other analytical specific scientific data. Most of EarthSoft’s work over its 15-year business history has been in managing data for discharge water, limnology, sediments, drinking water, groundwater, oceanography, hydrology, and subsurface geology, primarily geotechnical. In several niches, such as groundwater, sediment, limnology, and subsurface data, EQuIS is the most widely used data management software in the world.

EQuIS manages GIS, geology, and chemistry data, ensuring data quality with electronic checking tools. EQuIS data checkers ensure electronic data deliverable packages (EDDs) are both complete and correct, allowing data managers to immediately reject bad or incomplete data packages from the field or lab. The result is a much better data warehouse, resulting in much better analyses and decisions and preventing faulty decisions. EQuIS web parts provide automation of the checking and loading workflow for large organizations that need faster and more accurate transactions.

EQuIS data warehouses can be encapsulated with ArcGIS, making the data highly usable. EarthSoft has successfully trained many geologists, hydrologists, chemists, and project managers to use EQuIS and ArcGIS to view, report, graph, model, contour, and generate other data analyses. Several case studies and technical articles about EQuIS for ArcGIS are on the www.EarthSoft.com, with specific information ArcGIS – including animations, images, papers, brochures, and FAQs – available from the EQuIS for ArcGIS resource page.

EQuIS for ArcGIS integrates the leading environmental software packages for specialized tasks. (A data sheet is available.) For example, contours created using EQuIS and Surfer are returned into ArcGIS, where they can be used in further analyses with output from other non-GIS applications, such as EnviroInsite for 2D graphics and EVS for 3D and 4D visualizations.

…Real Time Data Submissions to EQuIS Clouds…

EarthSoft today announced a collaborative development and marketing agreement with QED Environmental Systems (QED). This work will automate logging and loading of well level and flow monitoring data from Retriever products directly to EQuIS 5. QED will support the EQuIS EDDs using QED wireless data collection solutions.

EarthSoft and QED see significant added benefit to both client bases with the integration of real-time, wireless data collection into EQuIS. These benefits include increased reliability, accuracy, and timeliness for this data.

Both firms have large globally installed bases and will market the integration to their existing clients and to new monitoring program opportunities. The firms will continue this collaboration, and will innovate rapidly on new environmental data collection and management technologies. Both QED and EarthSoft are seeking case studies and reference sites to implement pilots demonstrating the combined workflow automation.

EarthSoft and QED can already demonstrate real-time Retriever links. The Retriever data collector is solar-powered and uses wireless communications. The built in microcomputer takes data readings from the flow and level sensors, and sends the data at preset intervals to EarthSoft’s EDP Enterprise, where specific errors, outliers or corrupted data are instantly flagged. EDP Enterprise can then perform the required calculations and generate triggers and alerts if incoming data exceeds predefined ranges. EarthSoft’s EZView visualizes live and stored data over the web. The data can also be displayed over web-based GIS and mapping interfaces.

Mitch Beard, CEO of EarthSoft said “The world will collect more data in the next five years than in our entire history, and EarthSoft is pleased to work with QED integrating our data collection workflows. The amount of data from these automated and real time networks require a powerful but flexible workflow capability like EQuIS and QED provide. Some of these data streams are not conducive to direct submissions to relational databases, so some pre-processing may be desired. This is a huge amount of data.”

QED Environmental Systems (a Test America company) is recognized as a world leader in air-powered pumping systems for sampling and liquid extraction at landfills, groundwater remediation sites, refineries, landfills, mines and industrial sites. QED’s product lineup includes the most complete line of air-powered groundwater sampling bladder pumps, groundwater remediation pumps, landfill leachate and methane condensate extraction pneumatic pumps, low profile air-strippers, and wireless remote data acquisition systems.

EarthSoft’s EQuIS is the most widely used landfill and environmental data management system in the world.

…Spider Diagrams and ArcGIS Server web GIS modules…

September 26, 2008 - EarthSoft today announces several new GIS module improvements, including a new EQuIS for ArcGIS Server web GIS Enterprise module.

Spider Diagrams

EQuIS for ArcGIS can now produce “Spider Diagrams”, also called “Chem Data Boxes” -- advanced labeling tools for re-arranging and re-sizing cross-tab labels driven by data queries.

Several EQuIS clients have requested Spider Diagrams in the past, stating that these quite often had to be produced by the CAD department and represented tremendous labor investments. EQuIS’s new functionality represents a big step forward in producing these advanced graphics efficiently. These Spider Diagrams are created by seamlessly integrating EnviroInsite tables with ArcMap. Further innovation will be forthcoming now that EnviroInsite is included with each EQuIS 5 Professional license.

September 26, 2008 – EarthSoft today announces several new GIS module improvements, including a new EQuIS for ArcGIS Server web GIS Enterprise module.

Spider Diagrams

EQuIS for ArcGIS can now produce “Spider Diagrams”, also called “Chem Data Boxes” — advanced labeling tools for re-arranging and re-sizing cross-tab labels driven by data queries.

EQuIS for ArcGIS Server

EarthSoft also announced EQuIS for ArcGIS Server, a totally new module for those groups using ArcGIS Server 9.2 or 9.3 for web GIS. EQuIS is the only commercially available environmental data management software in the world supporting ArcGIS Server at this time.
EQuIS for ArcGIS Server includes the following innovative attributes:

Graduated Colors – Define the color schema for the points on the map. This allows you to create a thematic map by selecting a layer, and then applying layer attributes and selecting a number of ranges.

Graduated Symbols – In addition to a color schema, you can define symbol schema for the points on the map based on attribute values.

Multiple non-contiguous Points – Select diverse map points by controlling list features. Like colors and symbols, this feature is driven through an intuitive interface providing unrivaled flexibility and ease of use.

Drill-Down and Identify – Select features from multiple layers using a single point, line, or spatial selection criteria.

Save and Print – Use any of the following file formats to save and print your map: PDF, BMP, EMF, GIF, JPG, PNG, PS, SVGZ, or TIFF.

Parameter Value Display – Display the selected parameter values next to the symbol.

About EarthSoft: EarthSoft provides open, innovative software solutions for managing sample/technical data for laboratories, consultants/engineers, owner/operators, responsible parties and other stakeholders. An integrated data management system provides much more than just the ability to archive data electronically. Companies and government agencies worldwide are reaping the benefits of data management in a relational database integrated with improved analytical tools and enhanced visualization applications. Benefits include being able to manage data more quickly and accurately which, in turn, contributes to better decision-making and response. ESRI's ArcGIS and EarthSoft's EQuIS for ArcGIS represent tools in the GIS realm to support scientists in these efforts and are an excellent example of software integration which leverages the value inherent in the data. Case studies illustrate key benefits gained and efficiencies realized by application integration.

Abstract: This project consisted of an evaluation of the Environmental Quality Information System (EQuIS) software designed by EarthSoft, Inc. as an environmental data management and analysis platform for monitoring and remediation projects. In consultation with the EQuIS vendor, six primary modules were tested in this evaluation. These were: Chemistry, Geology, ArcView Geographic Information System (GIS) Interface, Data Verification Module (DVM), CrossTab Report Writer, and Electronic Laboratory Data Checker (ELDC). These modules were chosen for testing because they are the most commonly used. As a part of this evaluation, a demonstration of the technology was conducted by the SITE Program at Science Applications International Corporation's (SAIC) offices in Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio and McLean, Virginia. The purpose of the demonstration was to determine whether the software performs the functions claimed by EarthSoft, Inc. and to assess the accuracy of the EQuIS output. In addition, demonstration results and other sources of cost information were used to develop detailed cost estimates for full-scale application of the technology.

Environmental site characterization activities at a large industrial facility can be a complex and costly endeavor. The high volume of data generated from groundwater sampling, soil sampling and other field activities is often difficult to manage. As computer technologies have advanced, new data management and data visualization tools have enabled engineers and geologists to efficiently conduct these site characterization activities. This paper will discuss the use of ArcGIS and EarthSoft's EQuIS Chemistry and EQuIS Geology databases as tools for the management and visualization of environmental data at a large oil refinery.
